Cheap And Easy Ways To Boost PC Performance

Even if you buy the fastest computer available in the market, in all probability it will slow down over time. When you experience computer slow down problems you can perform the tasks listed below to help boost PC performance.
• Run the Disk Cleanup utility
Get rid of unwanted files from your system to free up space on your hard drive. Windows PCs come with a built-in Disk Cleanup utility that allows you to identify and delete unwanted and unused files from your system.
You may also use a reliable third-party disk cleanup tool to efficiently manage disk space. Third-party disk clean up software includes several features, such as the option of removing duplicate files and privacy data that the Disk Cleanup tool does not have.
• Run the Disk Defragmenter utility
On a new PC, data is stored as continuous blocks of information on the hard disk. Over time, the data on the hard disk becomes fragmented, and as a result, your operating system takes more time to retrieve a particular file.
Experts recommend that you run the Disk Defragmenter utility at least once a month to optimize your hard disk’s efficiency. For best results, run the Disk Defragmenter utility immediately after you have removed unwanted files from your computer using the Disk Cleanup utility.
• Remove unwanted startup programs
If your computer is painstakingly slow at system startup or shut down, take a look at your startup programs. Startup programs are those which load automatically when you start your computer. The startup programs consume a substantial amount of system resources in terms of CPU and memory usage when you start your system.
Run the “msconfig” command to see which programs are loading automatically and disable the ones that are not required.
• Remove unused desktop icons
Having too many desktop icons may also slow down your computer during startup or shutdown. This is why you should not keep alot of program shortcuts on your desktop. Keep only the ones you regularly access.
• Run regular virus/malware scans
Malware, such as virus, worms, trojans, adware and spyware are a big deterrent to your system’s performance. To keep such malicious programs at bay, install reliable antivirus and antispyware tools on your system.
• Keep your operating system, drivers, and software up-to-date
Outdated files not only cause various errors, but may also slow down your computer. To maintain optimal performance of your computer, regularly update the operating system, drivers, and software with the latest updates, hotfixes and patches.
• Keep your registry free from unwanted and invalid information
Last, but not least, run regular registry scans, using reliable and advanced registry cleaning software to maintain a healthy and compact registry.
