Specifications: These laptops are two of my favorite laptop model for the past year. The Apple MacBook MC207LL/A is a full-featured 13.3-inch laptop while the Asus UL30A-X5 is a sleek ultra-thin model. Both these models have very strong selling points and I would definitely have a very hard time if I had to choose to buy either one. The Apple model has a 2.26Ghz processor, 2GB of DDR3 Ram and 250GB for storage. The Asus model on the other hand comes with a 1.3Ghz processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 500GB of storage. Although the Apple laptop has a more powerful processor, the ample storage and RAM on the Asus model more than makes up for it. If you don't perform a lot of heavy computing tasks on your laptop (such as running heavy applications), the specs on the Asus machine would prove to be more than sufficient.
Design: The Apple MacBook MC207LL/A is full-sized laptop, weighing in at 4.7 pounds. The Asus UL30A-X5 is just 0.98-inches in thickness and is much more portable at just 3.74 pounds. The Apple MacBook sports an all-white uni-body polycarbonate external casing while the UL30A-X5 has a beautiful brushed-metal casing. It is of no doubt that the Asus model is the more portable machine but in terms of aesthetics, these two models are some of the most stylish laptops in the market.
Features & Performance: Considering the ample RAM on the Asus UL30A-X5, it is designed for heavy multitasking. The average user will find this model to be more than enough for running everyday computing tasks. The Apple MacBook MC207LL/A is more suited for handling moderate to heavy PC tasks. Plymouth man sues HP over laptop battery fire

For John Norrie, the recall of his HP Pavilion notebook computer came too late.
The laptop allegedly overheated, causing a fire that ripped through Norrie's Plymouth home in November 2006 while he was sleeping. The house was destroyed and Norrie suffered serious injuries in the process of escaping.
His lawyers have now filed a civil lawsuit against laptop-maker Hewlett-Packard and are seeking more than $225,000 in damages. The suit, first filed in Plymouth County Superior Court, was transferred to US District Court yesterday.
According to court papers, the laptop -- a gift Norrie received six months before the fire -- was defective. "Hewlett-Packard Company was negligent with respect to its manufacture, sale, instructors, and/or distribution of the subject laptop which was defective or was otherwise unfit for use by consumers," the suit says.
Norrie could not be reached today and his lawyer, Francis J. Lynch III, did not return phone calls.
Boston attorney Christopher G. Betke, who is representing Hewlett-Packard in the case, also did not return calls.
Since 2005, Hewlett-Packard has announced recalls of its lithium-ion batteries four times in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory authorities. Customers affected by the recalls were able to receive replacement laptop batteries at no cost.
In recent years, other computer makers, including Dell and Compaq, have also recalled millions of lithium-ion batteries because they were prone to overheating and posed a fire hazard. In 2006, Apple Inc. recalled 1.8 million battery packs because of the same issue.
The problems with computer batteries have led to several deaths. For instance, a 56-year-old Vancouver man in was killed last August when his Hewlett-Packard laptop burst into flames on a couch. The death prompted a warning by Canadian government officials that the devices should not be left on soft furniture because the material can block air vents and cause overheating.
Others have said laptop battery overheating may be due to internal problems with computers, not where the devices are placed. Last fall, Reuters reported a Taiwanese national research organization was working on new technology that would prevent lithium-ion batteries from short circuiting malfunctions that can cause them to rapidly heat to 500 degrees and sometimes explode.

If there are wireless networks in the area, it will show you whether they are secured or unsecured. If you see an unsecured network, which is likely, you will be able to hop onto the internet using that connection and wireless router. Effectively this is stealing someone's bandwidth but more importantly, it is allowing a third-party to come closer to gaining access to the network core, your data and your hardware.

Remove one screw securing the modem card. Unplug the modem cable from the motherboard. Remove modem with the cable and phone jack. Remove six hex studs from the laptop ports. Remove one screw securing the motherboard. This screw is located on the left side from the HP Compaq 394224-001 ac adapter power jack.

Start separating the motherboard from the metal bracket. The motherboard has been removed. Now you can access the Dell AC Adapterpower jack and repair it. If the power jack is broken, you’ll have to replace it with a new one. If the HP Compaq 394224-001 ac adapter power jack is loose, you’ll have to resolder it to the motherboard.

Do Not Make These Ten Common Computer Mistakes

For the last 10 years, I have been writing about what to do to keep you and your computer safe and secure. Now, for a change, I will talk about what NOT to do to keep your PC nice and healthy for many years, while YOU avoid a lot of frustration, lost time and a lightened wallet.
1. Do not turn off your computer using the switch on the power bar. Use the proper procedure, i.e. click Start, Turn Off Computer, Turn Off. If your computer freezes or you get the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (especially if you still have Windows Me), try the good ol' CTRL + Alt + Del before hitting the Reset button, or doing anything else.
2. Never turn off your PC while you are in a program, or have multiple windows open. Close all the windows and applications first.
3. If you turn your computer off for any reason, wait a minute or so before turning it back on again. This allows the machine to clear memory and get ready for bootup.
4. Never connect new hardware while the computer is on. Turn everything off, connect your hardware, then boot up again.
5. Never push the release button on that CD or floppy drive until the drive light goes out. Never force a disk into the drive. If it will not go in easily, check for pilot error (you may have it backwards or upside down!)
6. Here is an old one, but still necessary: Keep magnets away from those floppies, and far from your computer as well.
7. Never bring food or especially liquids near your PC. If you do spill something on the keyboard, clean it up immediately. If the keys stick or you have other problems, as a last resort you can run the keyboard through the dishwasher, top rack, face down, with no soap. Let it dry for a couple of days, then try it.
8. Do not fall for phishing scams on the Internet. Follow this one simple rule: If you want to go to the Web site of your bank, broker, eBay, etc. click your Desktop icon or Favorites link, or TYPE the address into the browser address bar. Never click links to such sites in an email or on a Web site. Never copy and paste your username or password. The contents of your Clipboard can be seen.
9. Do not download anything unless it is from a trusted and reliable source, and you really need it and will use it. Screensavers are a favorite hiding place for malware. If you want a new background or screensaver, check your Windows first. Right-click a blank area on your Desktop, and click Properties, Desktop (or Screen Saver).
10. Do not accept offers you may see online to scan your computer or Registry for viruses or spyware. Some of these programs will report an infection where none exists (false positive) to scare you into buying their software. Even worse, other programs may actually infect your machine with malware. Apple will recycle your old laptop for free if you buy a new Mac. If you are a resident of Texas, Oklahoma, or Virginia, Apple will recycle your used laptop for free. Other residents of the U.S. and Canada can recycle there equipment without a new purchase for a $30 fee. This fee includes the shipping of the laptop to an Apple recycling partner.
HP will recycle HP and Compaq branded laptops for free. They will accept other brand laptops for a fee (typically $10) and even pick the item up at your home for additional $10.Best Buy will take your laptop for $10 and give you a $10 gift card in exchange. They won’t accept computers with the hard drive, so you’ll need to remove it first, or have Geek Squad do it for $19.99. They also offer a trade-in program for select “gently used” laptops that were purchased at Best Buy. You’ll need to be the original purchaser, have a valid ID and a receipt. They do mention that if you don’t have the receipt they will “make every effort to locate it for you.
Find a friend or family member that might be interested in a used laptop. Just as in Step 1, you need to run a low level format tool or disk eraser utility first to ensure data is properly purged.Sell or reuse some of the parts. If you’re comfortable taking apart a laptop it might be worth your while to sell some of the parts on eBay and reuse others. The hard drive can be turned into a cheap external USB device for backup or extra storage by purchasing a USB hard drive enclosure. Other parts like memory modules, DVD drive, and even LCD might have some value. Do a quick search on eBay or craiglist to see if parts from your laptop might be selling for a worthwhile price.
Dell will recycle all laptops for free with a purchase of a new Dell computer, and they'll recycle your Dell laptop at anytime for free. You may also choose to donate your laptop. Dell has partnered with the National Cristina Foundation to provide used computers to disabled and economically disadvantaged children.

Office Depot offers Tech Recycling boxes at participating stores. The boxes come in three sizes and range in price from $5-$15. You can pick up a box at Office Depot, fill it with qualifying equipment, and return it to the store for recycling.Staples’ EcoEasy program allows you to recycle Dell products for free at any participating store, or other brand items for $10.Earth911 and MyGreenElectronics.org compile comprehensive databases of local recycling programs. Try searching your area for a local recycling center.
Sell it on eBay or craigslist. It you decide to go this route, be sure to properly run a low level format tool or disk eraser utility on the hard drive first. Simply formatting a hard drive does not ensure that someone with the proper recovery tools couldn't still recover your files.
